The way Hiccup saw it, he had two options: cut his hair or learn to braid it. Not really knowing anyone who could help him with the first one, it looked like it was high time to learn to braid his hair like a proper Viking man. The problem was who to ask. Fili and his grumpy uncle were out, since he was still the nutcase with the dragon, and he didn't want to push his tenuous friendship with Kili by pestering him for the favor. Legolas he didn't know very well at all and while Merida said that some of the men she knew braided their hair, it still felt a little awkward to ask any favors that involved sitting in close proximity.

So, hopefully, Dany wouldn't think it a strange request when he came down the Compound's hallways looking for her.

"Syrax, stop that!" Daenerys huffed and plucked the kitten she'd taken off of Dr. Magnus's hands from the floor in the hallway. "No clawing at the walls! Look at those awful scratches you left! Oh, what am I going to do with you."

She sighed and started back to her room, and brightened when she spied a friend. "Oh, hello, Hiccup! I didn't realize you lived here."

"Try wrapping a branch in rough rope. Toothless just scratches on trees or the ground," Hiccup suggested, distracted from his real mission for a second.

"I don't. I was looking for you actually." He reached into a pocket to withdraw a few pieces of braided cord, some of them strung with beads for color. "Do you still need these?"

"I've raised three baby dragons, and yet nothing has been quite so exhausting as trying to keep up with this kitten," Daenerys replied with some exasperation, though she softened the remark by cuddling the kitten close and kissing the top of her head.

"Oh, those are lovely!" Beaming, Daenerys held out her free hand to let Hiccup drop them into her palm, so she could take a closer look. "Yes, I think they'll do quite nicely. Thank you, Hiccup."

Hiccup laughed, dropping the cords into Dany's hands. It seemed to him that cats and dragons could almost be the same creature in some ways.

"I'm glad you like them but um..." He paused before adding, "I was hoping I could ask a favor?"

Daenerys canted her head curiously at Hiccup and paused in the hallway to delicately deposit Syrax into her room. "Of course, Hiccup. What can I do for you?"

Hiccup laughed a little, hoping to hide some of his embarrassment. "I...really don't know how to braid up my hair."

"Oh, is that all?" Daenerys laughed, waving for Hiccup to come with her as she followed Syrax-the-kitten into her little temporary room. "We'll sort it out, then. Come sit down, I'll get my comb. How do you think you might like to wear it? A single braid, or something more like this?"

She tapped one of the slender braids at her temples that kept the top half of her hair out of her face, then chuckled. "A manly version of it, of course. Similar to what Legolas wears."

Admittedly, the elf was very, very pretty, so perhaps 'manly' was the wrong word...

Hiccup smiled, relieved when Dany took him seriously. It seemed like he'd gone to exactly the right person for th task.

"I don't really think it's long enough for a full braid like that, so maybe the second idea works better. Not that I think I can pull off Legolas' look. I don't have the..." Hiccup gestured at all of himself, including the face that he thought a great deal more plain than some. "Face?"

"Well no, you have your own face," Daenerys replied, gesturing for Hiccup to sit while she hunted up her comb. "It's a good face. Open and honest and genial. You shouldn't want to have any other face."

Hiccup did his very best not to go too red at the compliment. He definitely didn't mind being good or honest, but of they could have been complemented by 'handsome' he wouldn't have minded.

"So what kind of braids would suit it?"

"I think we'd best start out simple until you get the hang of it," Daenerys replied after a moment's thought. She reached up and pushed Hiccup's hair this way and that, trying to decide how it would look best. She laughed a little as his hair snagged in her fingers and tsked softly. "Goodness, Hiccup! Riding a dragon must result in very tangled hair! I shall have to remember that when my own grown enough to ride. Here, sit down, we'll sort it out."

"It was a rat's nest when it was short and it's only gotten worse." He reached up a hand, trying to untangle more of it but a lifetime of only finger-combing was hard to counteract.

"I think your doing that is making it worse," Dany remarked in regards to his finger-combing, laughed and carefully began to work through the snarls and tangles with her comb. "Don't you own a brush? Or a comb? Something?"
